The unforgettable story of the past remains in the grandeur of a white washed castle located in the central region of Ghana. Cape Coast Castle contains the legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Take a guided tour of the dungeons and courtyards where a large number of enslaved Africans were kept in inhumane conditions, cruelly branded and later sold to work on plantations in the Caribbean. Housed in the Castle are grounds of shame and stigma, walls of trauma and fear, and stairs of hopelessness. Experiencing Cape Coast Castle is one that cannot be described but must be seen in person.
Once a storehouse for gold and later becoming a haunting legacy of slavery and colonialism, Elmina Castle is amongst a few castles that serve as a reminder of Ghana’s dark history. The “Door of No Return” at Elmina Castle symbolises the painful legacy of the slave trade. Built in the 15th century, the ivory coloured distinct colonial architecture is testament to the engineering skill of the Portuguese. As you explore this Castle, you’ll see the place where enslaved Africans were bought and traded for goods such as textiles and ammunitions.
The Kakum National Park is famous for its rainforest Canopy Walkway, and is a perfect opportunity to see much of Ghana’s indigenous plant life, and a multitude of bird and butterfly species, and rare local animals. The Canopy Walkway is composed of a 350m suspended bridge, and seven tree platforms that reach the height of 30m above the forest floor. From the treetops, you’ll experience a unique and spectacular view of the rainforest’s ecosystem, which could never be viewed from the ground. The beautiful nature walks and sun bird trail is not to be forgotten, and well worth a visit.
